Broder l'invisible is Carolle Bénitah's inaugural exhibition at the gallery. Through a vast selection of works, the gallery presents a landscape steeped in intimacy, a key notion of Bénitah's practice. Since the 2000s, her work has built around the photographic medium, sourcing material from her personal archive, questioning her individual and family history in a perpetual quest for identity. Highly cathartic, it echoes a deep introspection, interrogating notions of loss, grief and memory. The artist's relationship to photography, both material and temporal, is expressed in direct interventions onto the medium's surface. By embroidering, drawing, and at times juxtaposing layers of gold leaf over it, Bénitah instils a sculptural and haptic sense into these works. As a transdisciplinary artist, Carolle Bénitah moves beyond the traditional boundaries of photography.Photographs trace our existence as much as our relationship to the other. For Bénitah, time spent elaborating her works allows her to realize what is said or silenced in these images — a means of reappropriating her past to better grasp her present self.

Carolle Bénitah was born in Casablanca (Morocco) in 1965, she lives and works in Marseille (France). She studied at the École de la Chambre Syndicale de la Couture Parisienne (promotion 1991). For ten years thereafter, she worked as a fashion designer, before beginning to learn photography in 2001. She graduated from École Nationale Supérieure de la Photographie in Arles, France, with the Jury’s distinction in 2015.Her practice finds its place in the field of the intimate. Today, her work leads to subjects such as family, desire, loss, mourning and confinement, while touching on the universal. She cultivates a protean approach to creation by developing installations through which she questions identity and self-construction. By using materials that populate the domestic world (placemats, monogrammed handkerchiefs, tea towels, wedding trousseau linens, etc.) and trivial objects which she creates and embroiders, she overturns the hierarchy of the arts.Searching for old and forsaken photographs, gathered at garage sales and flea markets, Carolle Bénitah resurrects them into machines of wonder through her intervention with embroideries or golden leaves: golden foils and dots become mirrors or vessels through which one may perceive their reflection. The work of Carolle Bénitah has been published in magazines such as Leica World, Shots Magazine, Photos Nouvelles, Spot, Center for Photography Houston, Foto Noviny, and Lens Culture, among others.
