Sudanese Photography
Past exhibition
Overview
The Gallery Clémentine de la Féronnière, in partnership with the Musée du Quai Branly and on the occasion of Photoquai, presents the exhibition “Sudanese Photography” (from the 8th to the 22nd of November 2011).
The exhibition covers almost a century of photographs produced by the collectif Elnour founded in 2003 by Claude Iverné.
All in all, Elnour has 10 Sudanese photographers : from portrait photographers to the regime’s official photographers, with a few independents and of course the work of Claude Iverné who has lived In Sudan from 1998 onwards.
Among them is Rashid Mahdi (North Sudan, 1923-2008) whose production shows an unexpected Sudan from the period 1940 to 1970, which he has immortalized through the lens of a unique and technically sophisticated apparatus, as shown in the vintage studio portraits put on display on the occasion of this exhibition.
The more recent outdoor portraits taken by Richard Lokiden Wani (South-Sudan, 1974-) meanwhile offer a humanistic and contemporary approach of the South of the country, now independent.
